Dog Abandoned by Owners Survives Nearly 36 Hours Tied Outside Our Clinic
Our team at Arlington Animal Clinic experienced something we hope no pet owner or clinic ever has to go through again. A dog we now call Ralph was abandoned outside our building for nearly 36 hours in the Florida summer heat, and his story was recently featured nationally by PEOPLE.
A Dog Left Outside Overnight
Our security cameras captured a couple pulling up to the clinic after business hours on a Saturday evening. Instead of coming inside for help, they tied a dog to a water pipe on the side of our building and drove away without a word to anyone.
Nearly 36 Hours in the Heat
With weekend temperatures reaching into the 90s, Ralph was left with no food, no water, and no shelter from the sun. By the time our team returned Monday morning, he was dehydrated but alive. We noticed he had dug a hole in the dirt beside the building, likely trying to find any relief from the heat he could.
Our Team Steps In
Mandy Holden, one of our veterinary technicians, was one of the first to see Ralph that Monday morning. She was drawn to him right away and is now fostering him while he recovers and waits for a permanent home. Despite everything he went through, Ralph has shown nothing but a gentle, affectionate temperament with everyone at our clinic.
Why This Matters
Our veterinarian, Dr. Mike Deutsch, has been clear about one thing: abandoning an animal is never the answer. If pet owners are struggling to care for a dog or cat, whether for financial, housing, or personal reasons, local shelters and rescue organizations exist to help find a new home safely. Reaching out for help, even after hours, is always better than leaving a pet outside alone.
If you or someone you know is facing a difficult decision about caring for a pet, please contact us or a local shelter before considering leaving an animal unattended. We are always willing to help point pet owners toward the right resources.
